GDP growth mismatch

Good news—aviation market up and away: India is one of the fastest growing aviation markets and is poised to become one of top three globally in the next 20 years.

Bad news—flight safety out of control?: A recent report suggests that in four months the Mumbai ATC registered 21 “reportable incidents” as against 19 in 2013. These incidents ranged from aircraft forced to do a second attempt at landing to five events where a collision between planes was averted by a hair-raising 30 seconds.

Port partnership: In the wake of the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Bangladesh, the Indian government is planning to participate in building a deep-sea port in the neighbouring country. The new port at Payra is expected to come up between two existing ones in Chittagong and Mongla.

GDP growth—mismatched numbers game?: Many experts have expressed misgivings about the new series of GDP figures vis-a-vis other related economic data, including railway freight tonnages, bank credit growth, manufacturing output growth and corporate earnings.

Integrated transport systems—the way forward: Along with modernising theIndian Railways, minister Suresh Prabhu has proposed integrated transport systems as a solution towards decongesting cities. Plans are already afoot in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Hunt for NHAI chief picks up pace: To keep pace with transport minister Nitin Gadkari’s plan of building roads at the rate of 30 km a day, the government is expected to announce the appointment of a new NHAI Chairman soon.

NHAI to the rescue: The NHAI will provide funds to stressed projects that are in the final stages of completion. The decision is expected to benefit stuck BOT projects that are at least 50% completed.
