Can India become a Sporting Giant of the World ?

At present, with the current government sports policy and availability of infrastructure in the country, this appears to be a distant dream. The performance of  P.Sindhu in the recent world badminton championship has inspired me to write this blog. Recently the film Bhag Milkha Bhag has inspired many young people to take up athletics as a career. This is what I have learnt from a newspaper article. The performance of the Indian cricket team in the recent past has to be applauded, but I feel that India as a country has been too cricket centric . In our country, cricket is a religion. We have one billion experts on cricket.

It is true that cricket has given plenty of financial stability to players and top players have made a fortune from this sport. There is no shortage of talent in our country but unearthing that talent is a huge concern. It is essential to develop sports from grass root level. The administration management of sports have been taken over by politicians who are novice in this field. When will the glorious days of hockey return? Though we have performed reasonably well during Olympics in the field of wrestling, boxing and shooting but still a lot is left to be desired. The recent Commonwealth games in New Delhi have failed to deliver. In spite of discovering new talent, what we have discovered are scams. We stand nowhere in football, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, basketball and other leading global sports. We have players of international repute in golf and tennis but it’s easy to conclude that there would be many more decades before we find ourselves higher on the world sports map. So please keep dreaming along with me till it becomes a reality. Cheers.
