The Indian PM is on more of his global sorties. 26 Nations in 15 months. These are to be followed by a visit to UK on Nov 12 and another to the US later in November for the Pravasiya Bhartiya Divas in Los Angeles. Add the number of Elections the PM has fought and will be canvassing for during most of October 2015 and one wonders has this 3 term State Chief Minister not been able to make the transition from the State to the Nation?
There are fires of dissent burning all over. From the Patidars in Gujarat to the Kurmis in Bihar, the Gujjars in UP and the Jats in Rajajsthan, Add to them perpetually sick hot beds of Bastar, WB, North East tribal politics, JK, the refugees of TN, the drought stricken farmers of Vidarbha, Saurashtra, Telelngana and Marathwada and you have a nation on seige from within, a seething cauldron of dis-satisfaction and smoke screens.
Had India been a rich, prosperous nation all the weaknesses of politics would have been forgotten. Instead we have a broken polity. Those who found the right education and opportunities and moved and settled in the pristine surroundings of Western States in the US. The aggros took on the East coast. These people have done exceedingly well, and are prosperous. They nothing to do with India beyond some nucleus family here or there, and these people are not going to open their purses either to give or to invest money in India. They have left all that behind and are unlikely to be trapped again.
We can give them as many free dollops like evisas and all, but nothing will change. Who for instance will pull his child out of Dartmouth or Georgetown and put him into a under-grad school in India? None. So it is strange, that the PM is wasting political capital on a lost cause. The NRIs did not elect him and he does not represent the NRIS. There will some people here and there who may have a genuine business interest in India, but for them it is not necessary to go to the US again and again.
The minor plans like Wi-Fi on Railway Stations are completely absurd if not useless. A string of routers connected to each other can be used to create wi-fi hot spots in closed confines. This is basic tech and nothing more. Wi-Fi has limited reach and is appropriate to small audiences working on even smaller time windows like coffee kiosks or some such place to hang. To believe that people will use Internet at Railway Stations, 30 minutes for free is the worst titillation and will do nothing for Digital India.
Changing Secretaries-7 Home and Revenue Secretaries have been moved in 15 months. At this rate no one will agree to Work in Delhi. I hope the PM has his eye open-to local politics and dissent of bureaucrats. They alone can destroy his Government. And India will lose big.
