Defaults likely to surpass long-term average – Moody’s

Ratings agency Moody’s is forecasting that the default rate will surpass its long term average for the first time since 2010.
In its February research report the agency says the default rate on junk bonds will rise above its long term average in one year’s time, saying that it is “a sign that the corporate default cycle has turned.”
Low commodity prices are likely to continue to lead to defaults in the oil and gas and metals and mining sectors, the ratings agency says.
“Of the 18 defaults since the start of the year, half have been in commodity sectors,” said Sharon Ou, a Moody’s Vice President and Senior Credit Officer. “There were only 11 defaults during the same period in 2015, with only one in commodity sectors.”
“Two of the 10 defaults in February were of sizable amounts,” said Ms Ou. “Pacific Exploration and Production Corp defaulted on $3.7 billion in debt, and Paragon Offshore plc defaulted on $2.3 billion.”
The backward looking 12-month default rate increased to 3.7 per cent in this February compared to 2.1 per cent in the same period in the previous year.

Financial Terrorism : Jaiprakash Associates misses interest payment on bonds

As of October 2015, about Rs49,038 crore worth of credit and loan facilities of Jaypee Group’s three listed entities—Jaypee Infratech, Jaiprakash Power Ventures and Jaiprakash Associates—have a default rating due to delay in servicing of debt obligations.
Debt-laden infrastructure company Jaiprakash Associates Ltd has missed interest payment due on 7 March on its bonds worth $150 million. The interest will be paid later from proceeds of its sale of cement assets, the company said in a statement to BSE on Tuesday. “Interest was payable on the bonds on the semi-annual interest payment date of 7 March 2016. The issuer wishes to inform you that it has not paid such interest. The issuer intends to engage in discussions with holders of the bonds,” the statement said.
The convertible bonds are due for redemption in 2017 and has an interest rate of 5.75%.
The company had on 28 February said that it has entered into a pact with India’s largest cement maker UltraTech Cement Ltd for sale of its assets in six states for an enterprise value of Rs.16,500 crore in a bid to pare its debt.
While the deal is subject to regulatory clearances, it also requires an amendment to the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act, which at present does not allow transfer of mining rights for allotted mines from one company or subsidiary to another.
In the absence of the amendment, Jaiprakash Associates will have to de-merge its non-cement assets and shareholding in group subsidiaries to another company and then execute the deal.
“The deal has some issues with the mining transfer, so one does not know by what time this could be settled. The bondholders do not have any other option than wait, a winding up petition will also take time, and it is wiser for bondholders to wait for a resolution. In the long term, bond holders will be more cautious and careful in future about the borrower’s ability,” said Ajay Manglunia, head of fixed income at Edelweiss Financial Services.
The group has an estimated debt of Rs.75,000 crore as of 31 March 2015, according to a Credit Suisse House of Debt report dated 21 October 2015.
Lenders to the group have been pushing for asset sale to reduce debt.
In September 2015, Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd completed a sale of its two hydro assets to JSW Energy Ltd for an enterprise value of Rs.9,200 crore.
The business segments in which the company operates has been adversely affected due to various factors, including a sluggish economy, global economic uncertainties, volatile interest and currency rates, the company said in its statement to BSE. Jaiprakash Associates operates in cement, engineering, real estate and hospitality sectors.
This is not the first time that the group has failed to meet a payment obligation on its bonds. In February, its power subsidiary Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd said it may need more time, beyond 13 February, to fulfil its repayment obligation to holders of its $200 million foreign currency convertible bonds.
As of October 2015, about Rs.49,038 crore worth of credit and loan facilities of Jaypee Group’s three listed entities—Jaypee Infratech Ltd, Jaiprakash Power Ventures and Jaiprakash Associates Ltd—have a default rating due to delay in servicing of debt obligations.
On Tuesday, Jaiprakash Associates closed at Rs.7.89 per share, 2.33% higher from its previous close of Rs.7.71 per share.

Iron ore futures surged by 19% -Biggest Rise since Started 2009

Iron ore and steel futures have surged today on hopes for further stimulus in China and an improving economic outlook.
Prices for physical delivery of iron ore to China rose 19 per cent to $63.74 a tonne on Monday, according to Metal Bulletin, marking the biggest one-day rise since the index started in 2009
Iron ore futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange closed up 4.9 per cent to their highest level since June, while steel rebar futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose 5 per cent, hitting their daily limit under exchange rules.
A rally in metal prices and mining stocks has raised hopes that commodity prices may have bottomed and that China’s economy is improving. China said at its annual meeting of its national legislature that it would seek growth of 6.5 per cent for the next five years.
“Continued focus on reforming the economy, accompanied by measures supporting growth would be the most bullish outcome for metals,” Bank of America Merrill Lynch analysts said.
Still, Goldman Sachs said that it expected the rally to be short-lived “in the absence of a material increase in Chinese steel demand.”

India : Investor wealth slumps Rs. 14 lakh cr in last 1 year

Investor wealth has diminished by nearly Rs. 14 lakh crore in the last one year when the BSE benchmark Sensex scaled its record peak and has fallen by almost 18 per cent since then.
The index has come down by 5,378.26 points, or 17.91 per cent, since its all—time high of 30,024.74 on March 4, 2015.
The 30-share Sensex also hit its one-year low of 22,494.61 on February 29 this year.
Led by a decline in the stock market, investor wealth fell by Rs. 13.82 lakh crore to Rs. 91.56 lakh crore during this period.
Negative FPI inflows have also added to market worries.
FPIs, a major driver of the Indian equity market, pulled out a net Rs. 11,126 crore from equities in January and another Rs. 5,521 crore in February this year.
The net FPI inflows in 2015 had slackened to just about USD 3 billion.
Markets have seen extreme weakness due to various negative factors, including global economic slowdown fears, falling crude prices, worries related to Chinese economy and muted quarterly earnings.
Experts said domestic woes, including ballooning NPAs reported by banks and weak quarterly numbers in various other sectors, also added to the market weakness recently.
The index slumped to its lowest level in 21 months, when the Sensex crashed 807 points to drop below the 23,000-mark on February 11, this year.
The blue-chip stocks have also taken a hit, with BHEL sliding more than 60 per cent, Tata Motors 40 per cent and SBI 36 per cent.
